The Outdoor Classroom Day movement and the coronavirus crisis

As the coronavirus crisis continues, children around the world are spending more time indoors and in front of screens, as governments try to stop the spread of the virus and make sure children can continue to learn. However necessary these measures are, we are concerned about the impact these changes are having on children’s wellbeing.

As Outdoor Classroom Day can’t go ahead in its usual format this year, we asked our global community of teachers and parents what they need during this time. They told us they want ideas about connecting to nature, a way to celebrate the outdoors, and to connect with other teachers and parents around the world. That’s why – as part of the wider Outdoor Classroom day movement – we have launched Playful Nature.

Over the coming weeks, we will be sharing ideas for connecting to nature through play that can be done from anywhere – like your garden, balcony or even your living room! And on 21 May, which should have been the next Outdoor Classroom Day, we’re inviting you to celebrate your connection to the natural world by dressing up in nature

Bring Playful Nature to everyone on 21 May

It’s easy to do and anyone can get involved – just dress up in nature on 21 May and share your creations with the world! We’ll be sharing lots of ideas in the run up to the day – check out our Pinterest board for inspiration, including how to:

  • Make a nature crown out of leaves, cardboard or twigs.
  • Use a cardboard box and paints to make beautiful butterfly wings.
  • Turn yourself into your favourite animal with a simple mask.

If it’s possible or you have the space, children could spend time playing outdoors in their creation on the day. Or they could dress up for their daily walk or hang out on the balcony to make their neighbours smile. Whatever you do, share it on social media on 21 May using #PlayfulNature.

Together, we will help children to retain their connection to the natural world during the coronavirus crisis – and we’ll work harder than ever once it is over to make sure children have time outdoors every day.

Thank you for your continued support.
