Five fun ways to get outdoors with friends and family this holiday season

22nd December 2017

“The natural world is full of treasures, if we slow down to look.”

The festive season is about coming together and making time for the people that matter to us. The real gifts are the memories we create having fun, so turn off the TV and get outdoors this holiday season.

  1. As the end of year draws near encourage family and friends to slow down, spend time in nature and pay attention to the natural world. Be inspired by our Listen activity to sit quietly and observe the sounds around you.

  1. Play more this holiday! Learn this clapping game from Nigeria that is traditionally played outside and is challenging enough to entertain the young and the young-at-heart.

  1. The natural world is full of treasures, if we slow down to look. Forage for objects in the garden, local parks and while out walking. Build your creativity by making a garden mobile with what you’ve found.

  1. Spend an afternoon building a den in one of your favourite outdoor spaces. Bring back memories and create new ones by doing it together. Hone your team work and strategy skills, but most importantly have fun!

  1. Make a birdseed feeder out of recycled materials or fruit. Not only is this a creative activity, but it could also increase the number of birds that you see. Use a book or online application to identify the birds visiting you and increase your knowledge of ornithology.
