Monkeys climbing trees

4th August 2016

Monkey business or a masterclass in bravery?

For most of us, climbing a tree is an essential part of any childhood, but have you ever thought of this activity as a crucial part of your child’s mental and physical development?

Being brave enough to reach that high branch, or understanding whether a foothold is safe, is, of course, just a normal part of play. But it is also how children learn a range of vital skills.

If a fledgling climber slips, it’s time to get back up and try again – and it’s this sense of overcoming obstacles that teaches resilience and determination. As TS Eliot observed: “Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.”

Sometimes monkeying around is not just plain monkey business – outdoor learning and play are the building blocks of a balanced childhood.
